Five Seconds to Move Towards What You Want

Many people experience moments where anxiety doesn’t shout, it simply settles in. It shows up in the quiet negotiations you have with yourself before getting out of bed. It hides in the email you keep meaning to open but keep avoiding. It’s the moment when you know exactly what needs to happen next, yet your body replies with a steady not today.
When Mel Robbins spoke with Simon Sinek on A Bit of Optimism about how the 5 Second Rule came to life, her description of emotional paralysis felt familiar. People I work with often describe the same experience. Life keeps moving, yet something inside them feels paused.
Why the 5 Second Rule Resonates
Robbins didn’t create the rule during a moment of clarity. She created it during a moment of exhaustion, when avoidance had become heavier than action. That origin story matters. Many of the tools that genuinely help us begin in the messy, human places where we simply decide we can’t keep doing what we’re doing.
The rule itself is simple. When you have an instinct to act, count backwards. Five, four, three, two, one (Like The Count from Sesame Street if you want). Then move.
No special planner. No elaborate routine. Just a small interruption that gives your mind less time to talk you out of what you already know is right for you.
When Career Misalignment Creates Inertia
Feeling stuck doesn’t only come from emotional overwhelm. It can also come from career misalignment. When your work no longer fits who you are, your body often responds with hesitation, fatigue or a sense of dragging yourself through the day. That misalignment can create inertia. You wait for motivation to arrive, but it doesn’t. You wait to feel ready, but readiness never appears.
This is where the 5 Second Rule becomes practical. If you feel stuck in your career, count down from five and take one small action that moves you closer to where you want to be. It might be researching the qualifications you need for your dream job. It might be writing down what you want your next chapter to look like. It might be contacting me at pimokabo.com/career to explore your options with support.
Small actions break inertia. They create movement where there has been none.
Using the 5 Second Rule in Everyday Life
A way to start is to use it in the smallest moments.
Opening the email about a course you’ve been considering
Looking up the qualification requirements for a role you’re curious about
Writing down one idea for your next career step
Checking the job description for a position that keeps catching your eye
You don’t need to use it perfectly. You just need a five second window of courage.
The human brain is excellent at generating reasons to delay. The countdown gives you a head start before those reasons arrive.
What Might Become Possible
So perhaps the real question becomes, "What might become possible if you stopped waiting to feel ready and simply began?"
Where in your life do you feel frozen right now, and what is one small step you could take if you gave yourself five seconds of permission to begin.
